What your BMI means

BMI divides your weight by the square of your height. The result places you in one of four general categories: underweight, healthy weight, overweight, or obesity.

  • Below 18.5 — underweight
  • 18.5–24.9 — healthy weight
  • 25.0–29.9 — overweight
  • 30.0 and above — obesity

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. Factors like muscle mass, age, and ethnicity affect what's healthy for you, so discuss your results with a healthcare professional.
